Our Core Beliefs

The values and principles that guide everything we do—from how we recruit fellows to how we measure impact.

Our Philosophy

Ubuntu: The Heart of LEAD

At the heart of LEAD for Burundi is Ubuntu—the Burundian belief that we rise together, or not at all.

We don't train lone heroes. We build collective leadership. Our fellows teach WITH communities, not FOR them. They learn from parents, collaborate with teachers, and listen to students.

This is why our alumni don't just transform classrooms—they transform systems. Because they carry Ubuntu into every school, every meeting, every policy decision.

We Rise Together

"We don't train lone heroes. We build movements."

What We Stand For

Our Six Core Values

1

Love of Learning

We believe every child can learn—and every adult can teach. We model curiosity, continuous improvement, and humility.

2

Relentless Optimism

We believe Burundi's education crisis is solvable. It requires indigenous leadership, political realism, and long-term commitment.

3

Ubuntu

We believe leadership is collective, not individual. We grow together or not at all.

4

Excellence

We hold ourselves to world-class standards. We don't accept "good enough" when students deserve the best.

5

Integrity

We do what we say. We are transparent about challenges. We respect communities and power structures.

6

Accountability

We measure what matters. We own our results—good and bad. We learn from failures and replicate successes.

Values in Action

How Our Values Show Up in Practice

01

In Fellowship Recruitment Equity

We recruit from all provinces, prioritizing candidates from rural communities and women (50% target). We select for leadership potential and commitment to collective impact—not just academic credentials.

02

In Training Ubuntu

Our 200+ hour pre-service training centers on Ubuntu-based pedagogy, community engagement, and collective leadership. Fellows learn to teach WITH communities, not FOR them.

03

In Measurement Accountability

We track not just student outcomes, but community engagement, teacher coaching impact, and alumni leadership pathways. We measure what compounds—not just what's easy to count.

04

In Alumni Support Excellence

We stay connected to alumni for decades—coaching them into school leadership, policy roles, and education entrepreneurship. The fellowship is two years. The commitment is lifelong.

"Our values aren't posters on a wall. They're decisions we make every day—in who we recruit, how we train, what we measure, and how long we stay."

See how these values translate into action.
